SNEAKING AROUND THIS BROKEN EARTH
The door to the outside of The Academy swung open, hitting the wall as I walked out of it with determined steps.
The wind howled against my narrow body. My suit didn't take all of the cold wind against my body as I had hoped. I should have taken a jacket on top of the suit to not die of hypothermiaâbut then again, you would probably never have seen Batman with a winter coat on, out fighting the bad guys.
Being outside of The Academy's white cozy walls felt like I was about to commit a felony, for some odd reason.
I am going to be back quickly, I lied to myself. Nobody will even know I'm gone, and in the meantime, I can maybe find something that might actually be usefulâinstead of just waiting around for my impending doom.
I took in a deep breath and filled my lungs with the icy cold air. It burned as it traveled down my throat and into my lungs.
At this point, my lies could be so deceiving that I believed them myself.
I'm a speedster, I told myself. This will only take a few minutes, tops.
I ran over to the place where I had been the first time out with The Elites. It was a short run, now that I didn't have to walk at normal speed to stick together with the team.
The asphalt road cracked below my feet, as I came to a stop where the eerie tall skyscrapers started. On both sides of me were acres of dirt fields, that stretched as long as my eyes could see. The grass had stopped growing long ago because of all the radiation poison in the ground. Honestly, if I were the grass in these conditionsâI would stop being alive too.
The slowly decaying skyscrapers roared up into the sky.
As the wind brushed against my frail body, I wished I would have grabbed a jacket to keep warm. Fuck being Batman, at least I would have been able to feel my hands and toes right about now, and not this numb tingly feeling.
The large broken road continued in a straight line forward into the horizon, surrounded by the large skyscrapers and big piles of cement lying in piles close by.
I came to a sudden stop in the middle of the large decaying road.
There was something odd about this, yet I had no idea what it was or how to put my finger on it.
It was like the attitude had suddenly changed, which was crazy. Since I was outside in the open.
The sun burned down on my face, filling my skin with a small sense of warmth, even in the blistering cold.
I felt the urge to put a hand out in front of me.
It was like there was an invisible wall in the middle of the road. A point where the air changed in density.
Was I going insane?
I must have gotten myself a concussion from getting smashed into the wall too hard because there was no way in hell that could be right.
